In this ever-changing world of modern technology and travel, it has become a containing emerging microbial pathogens is more worrisome than primal infectious agents. The history of public health shows us that we ve made great strides in reducing the burdens of infectious diseases from our society and thus chronic non-communicable diseases became our problem. Yet, we continue to see microbes fighting back. This is evident in our foods, waters, nosocomical infections, and bioterrorism, to name a few. Therefore, confronted with all these factors, it is impossible to determine how prepared we are for the next pandemic. However, with modern day travel, it is possible to infect many within hours of days, such as in the SARS pandemic in the 90 s. This put us at a disadvantage, because we have no way of knowing the viral effects of an emerging disease. The Adirondacks Essay The Adirondacks are a group of mountains surrounded by many lakes and rivers, that cover over 5,000 square miles in the northeastern part of New York. There are a lot of large tourist villages on every lake. Motor boating and other water activities take place on almost every lake in the area. It is a vacation paradise for thousands. But, industrial emissions from Canada and the Ohio river valley always drift to this area and cause acid rain. This silent killer is destroying these beautiful lakes and their surrounding watersheds. Acid rain has an adverse effect on the lakes, and their surrounding watersheds, of the Adirondacks in New York State. Acid rain is defined as chemically polluted rainfall. Its causes are: coal burning plants, industrial factories, smelters, and car emissions. Its formed by water molecules combining with the sulfur dioxide emitted by the burning of coal and with nitrogen oxide from auto emissions. The result is an acidity level thats harmful to fish, wildlife, plants, and trees. Already, 1,200 lakes in the U.S. have been completely acidified so the lake water is unfit for human use and little or nothing can live in it. Such is the case in the Adirondacks, which are a group of mountains surrounded by many lakes and rivers. They cover over 5,000 square miles in the northeastern part of New York state. Its an area where large resort villages are around the Saranac river and Lake George. Lumbering and mining for iron and graphite go on in this area and it was once a place for major industry. Unfortunately, this is an area where acid rain has become a regular part of the water that flows through it. In recent years, acid rain hasnt really been in the news because people have felt that the problem has been taken care of so, therefore, its not around anymore. However there has been no evidence that the acidification of lakes in the Northeastern U.S. has stopped or even slowed down. The analysis of sediments from lakes in the Adirondacks has shown that acidity started rising in the 1930s and 40s and has been rising steadily ever since. There are two possible reasons for this. Scientists have been studying the chemistry of the rain and theyve discovered that while the deposition of sulfuric acid has decreased in the last two years, the deposition of nitric acid has increased. This means that the acidity of the rainfall hasnt really changed. Decades of acid deposition have affected the buffering capacity of sensitive watersheds so acidification in very sensitive lakes can continue even if acidity is decreased.Researchers have found that geology and weather contribute to the increased acid sensitivity at high altitudes. The rainfall and lakes collection of rain runoff tend to go up with the altitude in the Adirondacks. So higher lakes usually receive more acid rain. Also, these high altitude lakes tend to sit near thin soil leading to more acidity. All of this means that more fish kills will occur because the only life these lakes can support are water insects and yellow perch. With all these problems acid rain has made possible over the past fifty years, there are bound to be some solutions. A possible solution is liming. This form of treatment is named for the limestone commonly used in this procedure. It involves applying mineral powders or pellets directly into affected lakes and streams. It brings about an almost immediate and potentially revitalizing increase in ph. The water containing the buffering agent is flushed out of the system and is replace by untreated water. This replacement will occur after a year or two. This treatment also limes the land drai ning into the lakes and streams. Watershed liming would prevent the potential of toxic over buffering that has resulted from some of the poorly controlled lake treatments. Of course, it didnt stop there for Apple, as the company continuously innovated and introduced new products to the market such as the iPad. 3) Threat of substitute products or services: It is evident that a simple smart phone could be viewed as a substitute to the iPhone, a simple mp3 player to the iPod, and a Samsung tablet to the iPad. Apple dominates in such great fashio because the company has achieved economies of scale, enabling it to produce at a lower cost, and Apple simply markets better than its competition. Apples brand equity and brand recognition is so high and well known that it further establishes an advantage over its substitute competitors. It is true that there are substitutes readily available, but Apple has done such a phenomenal job marketing its products that its customer perceives its products to be better quality and better value to that of its competitors. 4) The bargaining power of suppliers: Considering that there are many organisations operating in the consumer electronics industry, organisations tend to be more elastic with respect to suppliers. If a given supplier were to increase its prices, an organization would likely seek out an alternative supplier, since there are so many firms within the industry. It must be noted, however, that suppliers in this industry have some power with respect to what they are supplying. The fact that the suppliers are supplying unique and highly differentiated materials is what gives them such power. Their ability to supply such unique and differentiated materials gives the suppliers some bargaining power. 5) The bargaining power of customers: The threat of buyers, is really no threat to Apple. For starters, Apple has millions of buyers, some of which are large corporations. Secondly, Apples products are both unique and differentiated, illustrating the power of buyers is lower. In this case, Apple does have the ability to increase its prices on some of its products because of the unique product offering and due to the fact that the majority of its products are well differentiated from the competition. It is important, however, for Apple to ensure that the price increase is not too drastic or some customers may begine seeking altenatives. Importance: Five Forces Model Porters five forces model determine a companys competitive environment, which affects profitability. The bargaining power of buyers and suppliers affect a small companys ability to increase prices and manage costs, respectively. For example, if the same product is available from several suppliers, then buyers have bargaining power over each supplier. However, if there is only one supplier for a particular component, then that supplier has bargaining power over its customers. Low-entry barriers attract new competition, while high-entry barriers discourage it.

More research is needed for this model known as ASIMO as it has received massive criticism from the humanists who claim that the company is aiming at substituting the human functions, however, the company claims that the development of this robot is meant to be of assistance to humans but cannot substitute the human basic senses which we heavily rely on. The only natural gas vehicle, which is sold in the US, is the Honda Civic GX (Gable 2008). This car has been in the market and it is the ‘most green’. With the emphasis on being green, you would expect this car to be the most sought. On the contrary, it has received a very low reception from dealerships and consumers alike although this has been coupled by the lack of a marketing strategy from the company for this invention. Consumers sight the hefty amount of money required to buy the car and the lack of natural gas fueling stations as the reason they have not considered the car. In an attempt to be green, Honda has outsourced its services having nothing to do with the actual manufacture of cars. The company has further set procedures it says are meant to reduce distractions in the manufacturing plants by having all staff in white laboratory coats. This they say, being a standard in all their plants worldwide, is aimed at making their operations uniform around the world (Dogson 2008). Their plants are also very well attended to and have well-trimmed gardens, and other aesthetics not typical of manufacturing plants. In furthering their green course, they do not expend any waste as all their material are recycled or converted into sources of energy. They have adopted a clean and green mantra and assert that what is produced under unclean circumstances cannot be expected to be of high quality. However, going green is yet to rake in actual profits for Honda, in fact it seems to be more of an obsession rather than an upgrade of operations. Capture This part involves getting the benefits from the actions taken during the implementation stage. It involves a coordinated efforts aimed at quantifying the monetary and the other benefits that accrue from the implementation of the innovations. Companies mostly apply the tactic of aggressive marketing to inform customers of their products. This is also a coordinated effort that requires extensive research, planning and budgetary allocation to be successful (Wang 2009). All innovation would be in vain if the products developed do not get the required attention in the market. In order to capture the markets attention and reap the benefits, there needs to be a relentless ca mpaign that focuses on getting vehicles off the factory and onto the roads where they are required. Honda has outsourced its maintenance department that deals with the upkeep of their plants in a bid to eradicating distractions that may arise from these activities. This is a laudable maneuver, as engineers are not expected to fully concentrate on their innovative obligations and simultaneously undertake the maintenance of the facilities. The benefit of having an expert in plant maintenance is that hazards that may arise from otherwise trivial occurrences are minimized. Innovation leads to the discovery of better materials that reduce environmental pollution. In order to attain the required levels of emission, Honda has endeavored into the production of lighter materials for their jets, which are recyclable with minimal wastages. The environmental benefits can be immense not only for the company presently but for even the future undertakings. Honda has the best concept in the world f or a vehicle that solely relies on natural gas and therefore very environmental friendly. In order for the obvious benefits to be realized from the sale of this model, the company needs to adopt a strategy that aims at reducing the purchase price of the vehicle and also availing the necessary ingredients needed for the model to run properly. This maneuver can ensure that people invest their money on this model. Considering that the model has been in the market since 1998 and has neither been embraced by the customers nor the dealerships, there is a need to refocus on the part of the company. Recommendations Employees are undoubtedly a valuable resource in any company whichever level they serve at. Therefore, for Honda to make great strides towards a better future, employee involvement in matters of management is paramount. Lack of a coordinated effort that aims at giving a voice to employees can spell ultimate loss of the innovative edge. It is not the engineers who have the greates t view of what vacuum exists in the market! It might be the staff member who is not involved in the manufacture of the vehicles but uses them on a daily basis as he commutes to work. In the past, when Honda was introduced into the US, the company was marketing motorcycles with large engine capacities. However, the company staff used scooters to commute to and from work. It is the scooters, rather than the big engine motorcycles that elicited interest fro the local folk. The company thus endeavored into the manufacture of the Supercub which was very well received by the US consumers. Honda’s management should venture into aggressive marketing of their products so that the customers are aware of the range of products they have. They have too many inventions that the low-key reception of some of their products point towards poor marketing strategies rather than the lack of a market. The company, in this respect should be in a position to determine what their competitors are work ing on and have times when they release their products into the market. Clogging the market with many new products simultaneously may be counter productive and forces customers to adopt a wait and see attitude, in anticipation for a better design of the product from the same company. Honda sources most of the parts they use in their assembly plants from Japan. This move is both laudable and regrettable. It is laudable in the sense that there is standardization in the manufacture of the parts and hence uniformity is possible for all models. The move is however, a miscalculation on the part of the company as shipments from Japan into other countries are subject to delays and other unforeseen occurrences (Yoshio 2011). Most recently, there was an earthquake in Japan that caused massive destruction and logistical nightmares and the company was inevitably affected. There should therefore be decentralization of production factors in a bid to spread risks and shelter the company from unnec essary losses. The natural gas driven car was a good concept for this era. It has however gone against the grain of expectation and while this may point towards the lack of a marketing strategy, it also points towards the lack of adequate investment in the support facilities required to run this car. Japanese models usually have a reputation for being affordable to customers and this is largely due to the adaptation of the concept of scale economies, where massive numbers of a product are manufactured attracting investments for support facilities, making the spare parts for these models available and affordable and consequently eliciting interest from customers. Honda should have implemented the concept of scale economies in order to realize more sales from a better reception of this model. Conclusion From the above, we can draw the following conclusions: Honda is one of the most innovative companies in the market today and this reputation has been built over a long period of time Its success can be attributed to visionary leaders who relentlessly continued to push for better products and more involvement. The company is just beginning to compete on a scale with other market leaders. The firm lacks a solid innovation management plan As initially stated, innovation management is not just the production of new technologies or products but rather the whole process including manufacturing and marketing (Burns et al 1991). It encompasses broadly all factors leading to the successful use of a product domestically or commercially without it posing a risk to either the consumer or the environment. With the shift of the market towards the reduction of over-reliance on petroleum, there is need to have a solid innovative plan that seeks to eradicate all sources of energy tied to petroleum. For example, when constructing a hydrogen-run car, there is need to ensure that the hydrogen used is not sourced from fossil fuels (Fackler 2008). This requires critical thinking and a total shift from the current way of thinking. To maintain sustainability, Honda should look into more long-term measures since their current policies do not seem to appreciate future challenges such as the insecurity of relying on petroleum products. His peeve has followed me into my professional life, and I cringe a little every time I see it being used improperly. Everyday, the single word, is an adjective describing something that happens daily (an everyday occurrence), or is common or usual. For example: Because I was going to be doing messy work, I wore my everyday clothes instead of my work clothes. Many people use the word everyday when they mean to use every day. When the two words are used separately, they are synonymous with each day. I eat peanut butter for lunch every day. Mistakes involving the use of the word everyday are common. Even famous musicians are guilty! Take Elvis Costello and his 1983 hit Everyday I Write the Bookits right there in the title: And Im giving you a longing look Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book Of course, Mr. Costello meant to say Every day I write the book. But the mistake is forever immortalized. Going back a little further, we have the 1958 hit Everyday by Buddy Holly making the very same error: Everyday, its a gettin closer, Goin faster than a roller coaster, Love like yours will surely come my way As in the previous example, were talking about something thats happening each day, not describing something thats ordinary or common. The opening lines of the play are evidently an exchange between two guards, Bernardo and Francisco, who are changing places because it is time for one to finish his shift, and the other one to start. They speak to each other robustly and yet also respectfully, and it is clear that they both are in service to a monarch since Bernardo shouts ou t â€Å"Long live the king!† (Act I, Scene 1, line 3) as a means of identifying who he is. Both Bernardo and Francisco define themselves by their duty of loyalty to the king, and although they take their jobs seriously, it seems to be a life of hardship, because Francisco complains of the cold and of the fact that he is â€Å"sick at heart.† (Act I, Scene 1, line 8). This same declaration of loyalty to the king is repeated when Horatio and Marcellus appear, declaring that they are â€Å"friends to this ground/And liegemen to the Dane.† (Act I, Scene 1, line 8). The Dane is a reference to the king of Denmark, since kings were often referred to simply with the name of the country they ruled, and it is Shakespeare’s way of making it clear to the audience that the action takes place in this foreign country of Denmark. The loyalty of these men to the Danish throne is not in the least questioned but an element of doubt creeps in when it becomes clear that the g hostly apparition in front of them is â€Å"In the same figure, like the king that’s dead† (Act I, Scene 1, line 41). This reference informs the audience that there has been a recent changeover in the kingship, and that the soldiers have not yet adjusted to the new king’s reign. Bernardo says â€Å"Looks it not like the king?† (Act 1, Scene 1, line 43) and does not use a phrase like â€Å"the old king†, or â€Å"the former king†. This suggests he is still loyal to the old king and thinks of him automatically as the rightful monarch. The soldiers ask Horatio, who is addressed as a scholar, meaning that he has more education and status than the ordinary soldiers, to speak to the ghostly figure, and Horatio too, reveals his fondness and respect for the dead king, whom he refers to â€Å"the majesty of buried Denmark.† (Act I, Scene 1, line 48). In this case the usage drives home the message that if the fate of the whole country is tied u p with the fate of the king. This little exchange injects an element of suspense into the scene, because the audience is bound to be wondering what happened to the old king, and who is now ruling Denmark in his place. These questions are left hanging in the air, so that the whole topic of kingship acquires an aura of uncertainty. Therefore, fixing these elements encourages employees to search for something else to blame. In great places to work, poor working conditions do not exist. However, the sense of powerlessness and being undervalued is really the main reason for leaving the organization (McCrimmon 2009). The second level involves considering employees as suppliers of services. However, acquiring this level requires a corporate culture that encourages personnel to consider themselves as handling their own businesses, being suppliers of services. Being paternalistic in nature, majority of organizational cultures acquire so much responsibility in developing their people (McCrimmon 2009). The third level of employee engagement is engaging leadership that necessitates culture change since it requires managers to change their perspectives concerning their roles. This is beyond second level engagement since this requires encouraging managers to become more proactive in searching input from employees though it also places more pressure to perform more thinking and should not become satisfied of simply following directions (McCrimmon 2009). Employees who prefer this level of engagement should learn more about business strategy in order to reach and engage higher level discussions regarding fundamental business direction. This is more difficult to attain since this deprives management of some of the authority they use to achieve their career success. They should be rewarded for team success and not only for their great ideas and decisions (McCrimmon 2009). The fourth level of engagement consists of higher level of culture change. Rather than consider employee ideas as suggestions, their ideas are employed in bottom-up leadership. In this sense, CEO should first learn to encourage dissents of open communications so that they would be able to participate effectively. Good work environment involves prevention of accidents and work occupation injuries that represent economic burden for employees, employers and to the society as a whole. Within the airline perspectives, this requires ensuring that the aircrafts are in good condition. Facilities and equipment inside the aircraft should also be maintained properly. Another important component of level 1 employee engagement is the Employee Empowerment that pertains to a process the allows or authorizes every person to think, act, behavior and control decision making and work in autonomous fashion. It can also be defined as a state of feeling self-empowered to take control of their respective destinies. Managers often have the power to provide that empowerment on the people under him (Heathfield 2010). As a result, these people often wait for bestowment of their empowerment and the manager would then ask why his/her subordinates do not act in empowered ways. This often results to negative concept of empowerment. In this sense, managers should initiate bestowing empowerment and the organization must establish a work environment that fosters skills and desire of their employees to perform in an empowered manner. The company has the responsibility to eliminate the barriers that restrict the ability of their employees to perform in empowered fashion (Heathfield 2010). Career development pertains to organized planning process employed to align the needs of a business with employees career goals. Creating a career development plan can support employees in performing their work more efficiently. Furthermore, these plans can be more beneficial for employees who might want to transfer in a company or search for other jobs in the future. Managers and human resources personnel often have direct responsibility in implementing career development process. HR professionals could create a compensation structure that satisfies both the business needs that enables career growth (Faria, 2003). The leadership style within the airlines should be incorporated with humility. As suggested by Jim Collins in Level 5 leaders, incorporating humility among leaders have a good reason: the industry is too complicated and fast changing, therefore it would be hard for one person to realize them all (McCrimmon 2009). Executive leaders and managers who often base their confidence on their capability of developing solutions can face difficulties at times when they seem confident. It would be easier to base their confidence on their capability to ask some facilitative questions. If compared to sports, business is all about playing coach instead of sitting on the bench simply coaching (McCrimmon 2009). Leaders who are solution generators often ask factual questions to realize issues so that they could create their own solutions. Unlike solution generators, engaging leaders often acquire ideas instead of facts through asking either of the following questions (McCrimmon 2009): What do you think is the major issue? What are the options you consider in addressing this problem? What is your chosen option and why? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the preferred option? Who are the people that must be involved in the implementation? What will it take and how long to implement this plan? (McCrimmon 2009) Engaging questions should not be limited to brainstorming sessions or quality circle meetings. Leaders can ask these questions whenever their subordinates come to them with the issue. Managers should restructure their role from authoritative manager and solution generator to being catalyst, coach and facilitator. Attaining the third level of engagement requires managers to eliminate some of their most loved responsibilities such as being so much involved in significant business problems and providing solutions for the most challenging strategic issues. It would be insufficient to ask employees how they could solve their work-related issues (McCrimmon 2009). One advantage of changing leadership style is this is simple to implement compared to cultural change. The latter is often time consuming and expensive but with minimal effort, it would be easier to encourage managers to become more engaging. Managers must reposition their roles as facilitators, catalysts to prevent violating employee expectations that managers should be answer givers. Managers might selective persuade some of their subordinates, specifically those receptive ones, to consider themselves as self employed service providers. Managers could establish processes that can confirm the productivity gains of such processes (McCrimmon 2009). Furthermore, as airlines shift across the four levels of employee engagement, the organizational gradually minimize the gap between employee empowerment and dependency. A transformational leadership that can be heroic in nature focuses on psychological perception of ownership and increases dependency. Considering that leadership should be demonstrated as bottom-up is valuable processes in equalizing this power balance, therefore this could develop more shared ownership and solid group effort is supporting organization to become more prosperous. The last three levels of employee engagement have a common characteristic: they involve employees minds and stimulate them to perform more thinking for themselves and for the companys future (McCrimmon 2009). The fifth level leadership consists of strategies that involve employees by making providing them a stronger sense of giving direction to the firm or at least, some parts of it. People are inherently passionate of their ideas and when employee promotes new products and process improvements to their managers, they usually demonstrate much more passion that they do for their regular work (McCrimmon 2009). The complex concept of leadership that might involve challenging the status quo has a strand. Leadership is linked to a romantic notion particularly people would like to view themselves as leaders for the same objectives they want to imitate their idols in sports, movies or music. However, unlike leaders, subordinates are often encouraged to become more engaged using bottom-up thought leadership. One good example is the Sony employee who created Playstation and influenced his senior management to create it. Similarly, staff of ticketing department could share their ideas on how to accelerate and improve ticketing process. They could also share their ideas on how to minimize losses associated with ticket cancellation, for instance, imposing cancellation fees to discourage passengers from cancelling their tickets. Nevertheless, the main important feature of this leadership is the courage to share their ideas despite of potential risks associated with it (McCrimmon 2009). In addition, the culture change necessary to implement the fifth level of employee engagement completely involves considering that much of executive activity is actually management that is suitable for fostering and supporting a coaching function. In this case, executive must only demonstrate leadership if they could promote a better fashion (McCrimmon 2009). When executive perform in facilitative fashion, employing engaging question, they are actually employing a managerial technique, instead of demonstrating leadership. Therefore, engaging leadership as mentioned in level 3 engagement is actually an engaging management. If they want to attain a passionate degree of employee engagement is to remove their monopoly on leadership. They must incorporate humility and emotional intelligence to change their identity to an executive that demonstrates an engaging leadership. Implementing such as major mind shift necessitates executives to disregards their pride and ego needs and view the potential of employees engagement through sharing their leadership tasks (McCrimmon 2009).

ART CRITICISM PAPER â€Å"The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter† by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-LeBrun   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the University Of Arizona Museum Of Art, the Pfeiffer Gallery is displaying many art pieces of oil on canvas paintings. These paintings are mostly portraits of people, both famous and not. They are painted by a variety of artists of European decent and American decent between the mid 1700’s and the early 1900’s. The painting by Elizabeth Louise Vigee-Lebrun caught my eye and drew me in to look closely at its composition.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   â€Å"The Grafin von Scholfeld with her Daughter† is oil on canvas art piece painted in 1793. It is a painting of a woman holding her daughter on her lap, the woman being â€Å"The Grafin von Schonfeld.† The woman is dressed in clothing that is from the upper class or a royalty stature in the late 1700’s. The clothing looks rich in material and sleek like silk in the colors of wine and a rich green. She has a covering on her head that looks like an extravagant scarf that drapes over her shoulder on one side, also made of the same silky material used for her dress. The woman has pale skin, reddish brown hair, bluish eyes, and rosy cheeks. Her eyes look very real and penetrating when you examine the painting. The daughter is about the age of 5 or 6 years old. Her arms are around her mother’s neck and legs draped across her mother’s lap. The daughter is wearing a white fluid dress that looks thin in material with a red sash around her midsection. The d aughter has the same reddish brown hair and rosy cheeks. The mothers and daughters eyes are equally as big in size, while the child’s eyes seem also very real and youthful.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The mother and daughter are sitting on a bench of some sort on a ledge of a window with a portion of the window open. Outside the window there is landscape of mountains, trees, and a stormy sky. The sky is rich with a high value of grays including the whites of the clouds. The technique for creating the landscape out the window, the painter used an atmospheric perspective. The outside is slightly less focused and very fluid compared to the detail used for the mother and daughter.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The colors used in the painting are very vivid yet rich in depth. A combination of high chroma and low chroma gives the picture its dep... ...oul. Maybe Vigee-LeBrun had this idea when painting and wanted the eyes of the people she painted to show the souls and the life of the people instead focusing on features that were less valuable.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã¢â‚¬Å"The Grafin von Schonfeld with her Daughter† is very interesting to look at. It shows history and context of the lives of the 1700’s. The textures of the dresses are beautiful and very alluring to the eye. The porcelain skin of the mother and daughter give the painting innocence and purity, along with the loving nature between the mother and the daughter. This is a very good piece of artwork because it draws you to it with you knowing why. Once looking at the painting you find yourself looking into the eyes of the subject being painted and seeing another life with in the portrait. The eyes can almost be eerie as well as breathtaking at the same time. The painting produces richness and a feeling of royalty that people in the 21st century do not understand but yearn just the same. I was very impressed of the classic style of the painting and my own yearning to have the same richness and â€Å"classiness† as the lives that were portrayed in Vigee-LeBrun’s painting.

Causes of Global Warming

Natural causes of global warming include the release of methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands, climate change, volcanoes etc. Methane, a greenhouse gas which traps the heat within the earth's atmosphere, is let out in large quantities in the arctic tundra and wetlands. In case of volcanoes, when a volcano erupts, tons of ash is let out into the atmosphere. Even though nature contributes to global warming, this contribution is very insignificant when compared to human contribution for this hazard. Anthropogenic Causes. Anthropogenic causes for global warming are those which are caused due to human activities. The most prominent cause being man-made pollution. A large part of this pollution can be attributed to the burning of fossil fuels. This includes burning coal to produce electricity as well as burning gasoline to power internal combustion engine vehicles. When these fossil fuels are burnt, they let out carbon dioxide, which is yet another greenhouse gas which traps heat within the atmosphere of the Earth and contributes to global warming. Secondly when the Earth is dug to extract these fossil fuels in the process known as mining, the methane inside the Earth's crust escapes into the atmosphere and adds to other greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. If we start investigating the anthropogenic causes of global warming, we zero in on one of the most important cause of global warming – population. More population means more requirements, which includes food, electricity and transport. In order to fulfill these requirements, more fossil fuels are consumed, which eventually leads to global warming. Humans breathe out carbon dioxide, and with an increasing population, the amount of carbon dioxide humans breathe out also increases and leads to global warming. Even agriculture contributes to global warming, owing to the extensive use of fertilizers, and the dung produced by cattle which is another prominent source of methane. These were just a few of the numerous global warming causes. Many people argue that global warming is a slow process, But they forget that the factors which cause global warming are rapidly rising. The rate at which we are contributing to global warming has rose considerably, and is expected to rise at a faster rate in the future. We have already done enough of damage, and hence it's high time we understand the global warming causes, we may not live to face the dreaded consequences of global warming, but if we don't act fast, it will be our future generations who will have to bear the brunt.

I have to walk past a darkened hallway on my right before I even come close to the door. The air kicks on at just this moment and I receive a quick burst of warm air puffing out of the open spaces. Sources of Criminal Law Essay A statute is a codified rule or written form of law. A statute identifies a particular rule of law or condition of a particular state or government. Each State has its own constitution; the states constitution and its laws are considered statutes. Generally, statutes are named through numbers or codes. Example: In Illinois, the definition of a forcible felony is found under : 720 ILCS 5/2-8. 720 is the criminal code, ILCS stands for Illinois Compiled Statutes, 5/2-8 specifies the location of the rule. The term, â€Å"Throw the book at you† refers to the book of statutes or book of laws of the state. Throwing the book at you means they are charging you with as many things in the statute book as they can. Statutes define everything we do in government, they are the laws passed by our representatives in congress or the state senate. These laws deal with everything from crimes, to taxes, to how to get a speed bump put in on a county road. Statutes are rules of law enacted by government and can be challenged as violating one or more of your constitutionally protected rights. VS. Common law comes from the old English system of law we copied here in the US. Common law is the practice of enforcing rules we have followed in the past. Common law is defined by cases through the idea of precedent. Precedent is simply applying the same rule that did before. Citing precedent is like saying; â€Å"you did this before, so do it again.† Example: Common law is the same idea as most parents employ with their kids. If you punished one child for biting a classmate by sending them to their room, you will also give your next child the same punishment if they bite a classmate. This is because historically, the punishment for biting was being sent to ones room. Thus, that punishment becomes the common law or common rule. The concept of Stare Decisis adds another element to common law. Just like at your home with your kids, the courts can change the rules on us. However, the only court that can change the rule is the highest court to have addressed the issue. Basically, add chain of command to precedent. Example: If the Supreme Court of the US (highest Court in the entire US) makes a rule: such as the rule requiring all arrested person to be given Miranda rights, NO other court can change that rule except the US Supreme Court. Therefore every state has to follow that rule! Stare Decisis goes further though: If the US Supreme court decides NOT to address that issue and the highest court to hear the case was the Illinois Supreme Court, ONLY the Illinois courts have to follow the rule. This system goes all the way down to the courts in your area. If no courts have ever issued an opinion regarding the issue in the case at the district (trial court) level then they can apply any rule they see fit. How does this work? Statutes say what the rules of law are, Common law or case law defines how they are applied. Example: The constitution is a statute and this 2nd amendment says â€Å"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.† The statute can be read many different ways: Scholars debate whether the right to bear arms is a right you have all the time as a citizen or only in connection with militia service Common law or Case Law defines what the statutes mean. As recently as 2008, the Supreme Court was defining what the words of this statute (2nd Amend.) mean, the Supreme Court held, â€Å"The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes† District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008). Our laws come from both Common Law and are made up by statute: Many of our laws come from common law and are then â€Å"codified† (formally written) into statutes. For example, most rules of evidence in a court room are defined by common law but have been â€Å"codified† into formal statutes like the Federal Rules of Evidence. The concept of hearsay came from the common law of England. Requirements for a criminal Act Statutes define everything about a law. They lay out the Elements of a Crime. Elements of a crime are the specific conditions that need to be satisfied to be found guilty of a particular crime. Elements may include a person’s state of mind or mens rea. For example: to commit the crime of 1 degree murder (every state defines things and terms things slightly differently) most states require that the State prove the accused intended to commit the crime. To do this, some amount of evidence must show that the persons action were not accidental but intentional. Therefore the persons intent is said to be an element of the crime. Other elements of the crime of murder include: a dead body. Motivation or motive is NOT an element of a crime because motive is not a condition that must be met to commit the act. You don’t have to have a reason to kill someone Due Process The idea of Due Process comes from the 5th and 14th amendments of the US Constitution. The 14th Amendment applies the right to Due Process to every state and any law enacted by the states. Due Process is simple. It means that the government cannot take anything from you; not your house; not your liberty; not your life; not a single cent without affording you the right to process of law. Process of law can be very broad; it can mean a criminal trial, an administrative hearing or anything in between. This is why you can contest every ticket you ever get including speeding, jaywalking, or even code violations. Helen Keller Helen Keller was an American author who lived to educate and inspire others to become the most unique author of her time. She was a gifted woman who had exceptional writing abilities. She utilized simplistic style to correspond with all varieties of people. She wrote to inspire people and to help disabled people achieve their goals. Her writing style was full of many types of diction, syntactic devices, and patterns of imagery to exemplify her life chronicle. Keller used an unadorned tone with superb expressions and descriptions. Helen Adams Keller was born in the small town of Tuscumbia, Alabama in 1880. When she was nineteen months old she was diagnosed with scarlet fever, which left her blind and deaf for the rest of her life. When she was a child she was put under the care of Anne Sullivan, and she would become her life long friend and companion. Sullivan began to teach her by writing with her finger, the name of objects into her hand. Keller began to learn very rapidly. She started to write very quickly using a ruler to guide her sentences. She learned how to read Braille and then to speak. In 1900, Keller went to Radcliffe College and graduated with honors. She lectured around the world about her life experiences and met many famous people such as Mark Twain. She was an extraordinary woman and one of the most recognized people in history. Helen Keller shows herself as a well educated, persevering, and eager woman. She brought her success through her education, which she was taught at a young age. Keller learned her thirty new words the same day she learned her first. Next, she presented a very strong personality. In her early years Keller states, â€Å"†¦although I find it difficult, I s... ...m her birth and follows on by each of her accomplishments. She wrote her story just how her life happened, she included all of her inspirations and the people that helped her fulfil her goals. Helen Keller wrote her life story as a tool for other people to learn from. She was plagued by disabilities that she had to overcome. Her story is wonderful and her achievements are amazing. Keller let nothing stop her from meeting famous people, to traveling all over the world to talk to people and inspire them.
